The SWIRLS (Sensitive Wideband InfraRed Laser Spectroscopy) project has officially entered its development phase following a successful strategic kick-off meeting on 25/11/2025. This international consortium is dedicated to revolutionizing molecular identification through the advancement of high-resolution, broadband spectroscopy.
The primary scientific objective of the SWIRLS initiative is to overcome current limitations in the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). By developing next-generation optical technologies, the project seeks to provide unprecedented sensitivity and accuracy in identifying complex molecular structures in the difficult yet important longwave infrared region (LWIR).
During the inaugural kick-off meeting, lead investigators from the partner institutions finalized the essential experimental frameworks required for the next stage of technical development. The meeting served as a critical forum for aligning strategic milestones and establishing the technical benchmarks that will guide the project’s success.
The SWIRLS project is a high-impact collaboration between leading scientific and industrial entities, including Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Programme Component Operator), Warsaw Military University, VIGO Photonics S.A., and ETH Zurich (all serving as Programme Component Partners).
The initiative is supported by a total investment exceeding 5.3 million PLN, which includes 4.9 million PLN in funding from the Swiss Contribution to reducing economic and social disparities in the EU and from the state budget through the National Centre for Research and Development. This investment underscores the project’s potential to drive significant technological shifts in the field of laser spectroscopy and molecular sensing.
As the project moves into its active development phase, the consortium remains committed to delivering transformative spectroscopic solutions for environmental monitoring and industrial applications.
